Retired Brother in Need

John J. Kopp, a retired firefighter and fire marshal who spent 32 years on the job, is in a Durham NC VA facility. According to the facility, he is completely bedridden and not expected to live more than 3 or 4 weeks.

The nurses say that while he is easily confused, he is crystal clear about the Fire Service. The Durham NC FD will be bringing several rigs to an event in John Kopp’s honor on Thursday, December 13.

The nurses are very excited for him and for the turnout at the Durham NC Veterans Hospital (next to Duke NC Hospital). We understand this is very short notice, but if anybody knows somebody in the area, please try to get them to attend.

John was a firefighter appointed to Ladder 108 on Siegel Street in 1960. He became a regular chauffeur driving some great officers. Several years later, John became the UFA Brooklyn Trustee. After his term, he returned to Ladder 108 on Union Avenue for a short time before becoming an FDNY Fire Marshal. John is a US Marine & his twin brother, Phil, was also a FDNY War Years Brother working his time in Harlem.
